Before checking this out, if you are still kind of fuzzy on what a chiasm is, this Wikipedia article is pretty helpful. You don’t need to know all the nutty details, just basically what it is.
So the kind of cool thing about textual stuff (like chiasms), is that we can debate it, and it’s kind of subjective to a point. So below is the artistic literary structure of Ruth. We don’t want to read too much into chiasms, it’s not like they unlock secrets that we can’t find just by reading the text, but they can make things more clear (or maybe they fuzzy up some things, too). But even if we were not to get any information at looking at the text this way (though we can), we can still benefit by giving the author the time of day to appreciate his art, the way he crafted the text. Can you imagine writing a whole story in chiasm? It would be laborious, well thought out, highly structured and time consuming.
A. Naomi- Too old to conceive (1:1 – 22)
B. Possible Redeemer introduced (2:1)
C. Ruth and Naomi make a plan (2:2)
D. Ruth and Boaz’s field (2:3)
E. Boaz comes back from Bethlehem (2:4)
F. Boaz asks, “Whose young woman is that?” (2:5-7)
G. Ruth becomes part of the Boaz clan (2:8-18)
(Ruth brings barley and food to Naomi [2:18])
H. Naomi blesses Boaz (2:19)
I. Boaz a potential redeemer (2:20)
J. Ruth joins Boaz’s workers (2:21-23)
X. The plan laid by Naomi and Ruth (3:1-8)
J’. Ruth identifies herself as Boaz’s handmaid (3:9)
I’. Ruth challenges Boaz to act as Redeemer (3:9)
H’. Boaz blesses Ruth (3:10)
G’. Boaz promises to marry Ruth (3:11- 15)
F’. Naomi asks, “Who are you?” (3:17-18)
E’. Boaz goes to Bethlehem (4:1)
D’. Ruth and field (4:2-12)
C’. Ruth and Naomi’s plan fulfilled: marriage (4:13)
B’. Redeemer not denied (4:13-16)
A’. A son was born to Naomi! (though through Ruth) (4:17)
Epilogue: What a son! Grandfather of King David
There is another decent structure that is more complicated than this found here.
So here’s the question about Ruth and chiasms in general (due by Thursday, 10/30):
How do chiasms help in your understanding of the Bible? They can be more about the art form or about information we get (remember the other two chiasms we spent time on: the creation narrative and Deborah in Judges 4, you might need your notes). You can just post one response, you aren’t required to respond to another student. Of course, you can if you want.

Chiasms are able to let us see the specifics of whats going on in the text. In Genesis, God creates light, the firmament, and dry land. Then God creates specific examples of these which are the stars, inhabitants, and the animals and humans. Chiasms can also make a story flow better which makes it easier to understand. In Ruth, the chiasm helps us see how Ruth and Naomi are cared for and are given everything they need.

Chiasms are helpful to me because they show you a play by play of a story. So, if I read a book and I miss something I know it would be in a Chiasm. Basically they break it down and make it easier to digest. (and not to mention they look awesome ^_^)

I just took another good look at the chiasm, and it really does help me understand what i am reading. I’m not saying that I didn’t understand Ruth the first time i read it, but this chiasm helps me to get a better grasp on everything that’s going on. The reason it helps me so much is because chiasms just take out the main parts of the story and summarize them.

Chiasms are really awesome. They break down the story and let you see the story play-by-play. It also helps you understand the story on a deeper level, besause it breaks down the story in a way that even a moron can understand.
. Also, they are really fun and cool to look at, so for someone who is a visual learner (like me!!), this really helps keep learinig about the Bible exciting.

I believe the purpose of the chiasm is to give us a deeper meaning for the story of Ruth and bring into focus our view of God’s plan. The chiasm separates the story into parts, allowing for more understanding or our God. Despite it’s size, Ruth is a large part of God’s divine plan as portrayed by the chiasm.

I forgot to mention, as well as Ruth, the chiasm also helps us understand other parts of the Bible such as creation. Through chiasm, we gain a greater knowledge of the Bible, therefore strengthening our relationship with God.

Jonny pointed out a part of Chiasm that I did not notice. As well as providing knowledge of the bible and God’s plan for us, Chiasm also shows us God’s love towards his people. Naomi and Ruth’s husbands both died, but God provided a new husband for Ruth. Basically, the Chiasm tells us Gods purpose for us as well as his love.

I think chiasms are really cool! They help you to understand the story a lot better in my opinion and they break the story down so that if you wanted to you could study just one part of the story easier and with more depth. (I also agree with Katrina they do look pretty awsome

The Chiasms help me under stand the bible by showing that while each story has a main point, but there are smaller details leading up to that point which can give us deeper insight than the main point alone can give us.

Sometimes when I read scripture i just get the basic meaning of the story. I like the chiasms because they help me understand more important specific details that i don’t always catch in the first reading of it in the Bible. I also think it is cool how the two A’s and B’s and so on go together. It is really amazing to look at the complex structure of the story.

Chiasm work great when telling a story that is also a metaphor or contains deeper meaning. They tell you something important and then tell you about it again in a different way our situation. It emphasis’ the main point of the story allowing the reader to see a pattern and importance of that pattern. I like it very much because it keeps your attention, allowing you to connect the dots.

Chiasms are very helpful! When you read the story at first, you always get the meaning of it, but sometimes skip over the details that can reveal an even deeper meaning. It also helps keep the timing of everything in proper order. I know I get confused sometimes, but when you look at the chiasm, it helps bring it back down and just break it down into what is most important.
